All PPP connections (Point-to-Point Protocol) have a default MTU size of 1500 bytes and VPN connections have a defualt size of 1400. 28 bytes of this number is reserved for IP/ICMP overhead, so the effective MTU size here is 1472 (1500-28). To work out if this MTU is too high for your connection, you need to ping with this amount of bytes.
So to test for MTU of 9000, you actually need to set your ping packet size to 9000-28 = 8972. By adjusting the MTU value its possible to find the supported MTU value in the network. If the MTU value is not enables in the client side the ping output will be : PING xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx): 8184 data bytes ping: sendto: Message too long How to read, calculate and set MTU in Windows, Linux and Feb 20, 2017 Jumbo frame - Wikipedia
